Most homeowners don’t realise the finish changes how concrete feels under your feet, how much maintenance it needs, how slippery it gets after rain and even how the whole house looks from the street.
After working across Adelaide for more than twenty years, we’ve learnt that the finish often matters more than the colour.
The funny thing is, nobody notices a good finish.

Done properly, it’s clean, practical and suits a surprising number of homes. It’s also easier to repair if something unexpected happens years down the track. Matching decorative finishes perfectly isn’t always possible, especially once they’ve had years of weather, sun and everyday wear.
Most people assume plain concrete means boring.
Not really.
Good preparation, tidy edges and proper finishing make far more difference than people expect. We’ve seen plain driveways that looked far better than decorative jobs simply because the workmanship was right.
Exposed aggregate is probably the finish we get asked about most.
It’s stayed popular around Adelaide for a reason.
The natural stone gives the surface depth without trying too hard. Dust doesn’t jump out at you the way it can on darker finishes, and the texture provides good grip during winter mornings or around pool areas.
If you’ve got kids racing around in bare feet or elderly parents visiting regularly, that’s worth thinking about.
Here’s where people get caught out.
Not all exposed aggregate is the same.
The stone mix changes the whole appearance. Some blends are warm and suit older brick homes. Others have cooler grey tones that work well with contemporary builds. Looking at a small sample board isn’t enough. Always ask to see a larger area or completed projects in natural daylight.
Concrete has a habit of looking completely different once the Adelaide sun hits it.

The less texture a surface has, the easier it generally is to sweep.
The more decorative it becomes, the more attention it may need every now and then.
Neither option is wrong.
It depends how much maintenance you’re happy to live with.
Adelaide’s weather also influences what works well.
Long heatwaves, sudden downpours and cool winter mornings all affect how surfaces perform. Around patios, entertaining areas and pool surrounds, we usually encourage homeowners to think beyond appearance. A finish that looks fantastic but becomes slippery after a bit of rain isn’t doing you any favours.
Comfort matters too.
Some heavily textured finishes are excellent for grip but can feel rough on bare feet. Others stay comfortable to walk across while still providing enough traction.

That’s how you’ll know if it’s the right finish for your home.
